Drink filtered water. It is better for you and keeps you better dehydrated

2 rajee July 1, 2009 at 4:33 am

Get plants that don’t need much water. Saves on the water bill.

3 Dillon July 1, 2009 at 3:56 am

Rather than relying on air conditioning in the summer we just spend our time out by the pool. It requires an investment in sunscreen but one that pays off in the end.

4 Lindsay July 1, 2009 at 3:08 am

Living in the valley of the sun my biggest summer tip is hydrate! Lots of water or virgin margaritas depending on the situation really does make every summer day better.

5 Sharon July 1, 2009 at 3:07 am

Have a set, easy menu for parties and barbecues.

6 Marcy Strahan July 1, 2009 at 2:56 am

drink lots of water & never leave the house without container, bottle or something with water . If your car breaks down you need to have water handy until help comes .

Wear Sunscreen.

Try to limit outdoor activties between 10 am & 3 pm.

7 Dixie July 1, 2009 at 2:37 am

Carry a first aid kit with you when you go camping or on any outdoor activities.

8 geekbearinggifts July 1, 2009 at 1:53 am

Kids always seem to be starved (and dehydrated) after swimming. Keep yogurt, OJ, and frozen fruit around, and quickly blend for cool, healthy and refreshing smoothies they can drink while you prep lunch or dinner.

9 Beth M July 1, 2009 at 1:48 am

We wrap our farm fresh lettuce in paper towels and then put it in a zipper bag but don’t seal it. It keeps the lettuce fresh really nice!

10 Patti Sherman July 1, 2009 at 1:46 am

Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated and not too much sun!

11 Jessica Maurer July 1, 2009 at 12:42 am

Go to the movie theater. A lot of times during the day they show free kids movies for the little ones. You are indoors and in the a.c. plus it’s free!

Don’t forget to use sunscreen.

15 Betty C June 30, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Do as much as possible in the evening. Not only is it cooler in the evening, but you will have the bulk of things done ahead and it will free you up to enjoy the day more.

16 Donna Hunt June 30, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Check out the local section of the newspaper in your area. There are usually lists of current events like free movies, etc. and/or coupons for dining and such. You can still have fun while saving as much as possible! Thank you for the contest!

24 Michelle B June 30, 2009 at 8:28 pm

We sometimes catch a matinee at the theater for under $5 or free screenings of classic movies during the weekdays.

For a real cool feeling – salads, salads, salads, then a dip in the pool. Thanks.

26 kathy June 30, 2009 at 8:14 pm

I like to make as many “cold” meals as I can, deviled eggs, tuna salad, pasta salad, during the hot summer months.

27 Heidi Gail June 30, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Take advantage of free air conditioning at the library and the mall. There are often free activities for kids at both places during the summer.

28 Betty C June 30, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Our local AAA baseball games are a fun way to spend an evening. Tickets are inexpensive and if you eat well before going concessions won’t kill the budget.

29 Casey Becher June 30, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Get a cheap, fun sprinkler for your yard. The kids can cool down while you water the lawn.

34 Becky Grady June 30, 2009 at 6:25 pm

My kids and I like to walk on a neighborhood trail. It gets us out in the nice weather, gives us exercise, and best of all, it’s free! We have had the bonus of seeing a lot of wildlife we don’t usually see.

Day trips are a fun thing to do in the summer. With no worries about homework or school tomorrow the family can venture a little further. There are several books with suggestions about day trips in your area. I also found my insurance magazine had good suggestions.

48 Geoff K June 30, 2009 at 2:08 pm

The Scott Common Sense site has some terrific tips! Here’s my favorite, and one that I’ll be sure to use for many cookouts this summer (and in general!): Place 4 tea bags in a pot of water before you cook any vegetable and it will increase the amount of antioxidants in your meals. It also gives more color to vegetables. Thanks for the giveaway!

We go around our area and look up historical markers. Pack a lunch and have a picnic along the way.

51 Jennifer June 30, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Our favorite thing to do in the summer is taking a day for a picnic, fishing and swimming. That way we are all satisfied, the boys get to fish and me and our little girl get to pick flowers and watch squirrels and any other animals we can find. Plus it saves money instead of going to a movie and going out to eat!!

52 evelyn June 30, 2009 at 1:46 pm

53 Christine June 30, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Always wear sunscreen!

55 Christie June 30, 2009 at 11:45 am

Saturate a cotton ball with real Peppermint oil. Pour a box of cornstarch into a large plastic container that has a lid. Drop in the peppermint saturated cotton ball and put the lid securely on the container. Shake up the container several times a day for at least a day. When you open the container you will have peppermint scented powder that actually has a cooling effect on your skin when you apply it and in the summer heat that can feel good.

56 Roxann June 30, 2009 at 11:02 am

Make sure you wear sunscreen even on the cloudy days and don’t forget sunglasses and something to cover your head.

60 Jennifer gersch June 30, 2009 at 8:47 am

freeze lemonad for great ice cubes

61 Happi Shopr June 30, 2009 at 8:44 am

we freeze bottled water and use it as “ice” in the cooler for quick trips to the park, lake or store. We don’t have to deal with melted ice and have water on hand.

62 dawn June 30, 2009 at 8:44 am

Make sure there is Family Time it is so important like bike riding,a dvd, running in the sprinklers watever sounds like fun is the thing to do and share as a family.

63 R Hicks June 30, 2009 at 7:10 am

64 Denise June 30, 2009 at 7:09 am

65 Molly Capel June 30, 2009 at 6:24 am

Our biggest tip is to have lots of family fun! On busy days filled with work, laundry & etc, it’s easy to forget to spend quality family time together.

66 Sheila R June 30, 2009 at 5:36 am

If you are going to travel to somewhere hot go in July or other off season times during the summer it seems to be cheaper.
Remember the magic of summer and have fun and stay cool.

Nothing beats home-made ice cream topped with fresh fruit for summer family together time! Yum!

68 Rachel Hull June 30, 2009 at 5:05 am

Sun screen! It never matters how long I’m out, my skin is only ever white, pink or red. lol With a new baby girl, I am ever thoughtful that I want to keep her skin from getting damaged.

69 April June 30, 2009 at 4:44 am

Go geocaching…it’s cheap (about all you need is gas) and fun for the whole family.

70 JupiterCoyote June 30, 2009 at 4:38 am

Find a state park for a week and explore it!! One with swimming pools and streams for swimming are a bonus!!

71 angie June 30, 2009 at 4:34 am

Alway plan a get together day for the weekend. Even if it is just running around the backyard, it is a great way to bring everyone together and enjoy the weather economically. It also makes the week go by faster.

72 Chrysa June 30, 2009 at 4:34 am

On hot nights with no A/C, stick jammies in the freezer for a few minutes before bed!

73 Kristen Olson June 30, 2009 at 4:20 am

Lots of cut up fruit and water available for all. For the pooch, she loves ice cubes in her water.

78 jwb June 30, 2009 at 3:50 am

Carry two things with you at all times: a spray bottle of water and a towel. I got the bottle at the drugstore, one of those travel bottles, and use an older towel. Even with the humidity here in the South, a lady needs to keep her skin hydrated & cool! And the towel wipes the sweat away.

Thanks for the giveaway!

79 Jammie June 30, 2009 at 3:46 am

Stock up on koolaid and ice to make slushies to help cool you down ffrom the summer heat..

89 vanessa June 30, 2009 at 2:28 am

90 Abby C. June 30, 2009 at 2:20 am

Wear sunscreen EVERYWHERE and drink lots and lots of H2O. The sun is intense this summer and in many places so is the humidity, so those two tips will keep you protected and hydrated! :)

91 Amber June 30, 2009 at 2:13 am

Be sure to remember to have good times (parties, cook outs, etc) with friends and family that you might not get to see too often. Many times these people feel left out and this simple act of inviting them over can make them feel on top of the world.

Of course, be sure to use sunscreen and buy enough food for the whole bunch!!

92 Colleen S June 30, 2009 at 2:12 am

Spend time outside with a bottle of water and a tree to hide under

103 Kari June 30, 2009 at 12:02 am

My kids play little league baseball/softball so we spend a lot of hot days at the ballpark. I like to take a small cooler along with us – in it I have a small spray bottle of cold water and a couple of wet washcloths – great for cooling off/wiping off your face, etc. Thanks!

109 Justin Gall June 29, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Store wood furniture indoors in winter to keep it from warping from temperature changes and moisture. Clean wood furniture with a gentle detergent, then consider using a urethene or oil finish to protect the wood. (Take precautions that you don’t spill these finishes on the patio, where they can stain.)

129 Alicia Webster June 29, 2009 at 8:21 pm

My favorite summer tip is get away for the weekend. You can stay at a cheap motel, and pack a cooler if funds are low, but everyone needs, and deserves a couple of days to escape their day-to-day reality. You will feel so much better afterwards.

130 Jennifer M June 29, 2009 at 8:12 pm

131 Mary M June 29, 2009 at 7:56 pm

141 hminnesota June 29, 2009 at 5:11 pm

Where I live, I have just one motto- enjoy while you can..summer is so short in minnesota, I try not to let go by an hour without doing anything.

142 Rosey June 29, 2009 at 5:07 pm

If you leave plastic bottles in the car, full of your favorite beverage (even water) do not drink it after it’s been left sitting in the sun. The chemicals produced are bad for you to drink. Bring along stainless steel instead!

143 Pamela S June 29, 2009 at 4:52 pm

My best summer is advice is to safely enjoy the summer! Make sure to wear sunscreen if you’re going to be outside for very long and to reapply it often. Also always drink water BEFORE you begin feeling thirsty. Once your body experiences thirst it’s already dehydrated. And mostly to enjoy the time doing simple things with your family like going on walks, having a picnic, watching fireworks together, etc. Thanks.

144 autie June 29, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Put juice into a ice cube tray to make tasty ice cubes!

145 Alicia Webster June 29, 2009 at 4:32 pm

My favorite summer tip is to relax and get real. it is always a wonder to me that people aren’t dropping like flies from stress-related illnesses. It seems that so many people these days have forgotten how to let their hair down and just “be”. Even going to the beach is a big production. My mother-in-law is 68 years old and she is afraid to leave the house without make-up on. Come on girls, is this the best that we can do?

150 Jennifer C. June 29, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Freeze your juice boxes before a day in the sun! They will turn into slushies or just be very cold on a hot day outside!

151 Rebecca June 29, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Don’t forget the popsicles, kids love them and they are so easy; mix up KoolAid, Jello or instant pudding, place in posicle molds or Dixie cups with a stick and in a few hours you will have a quick and easy treat ;) For an extra special touch, mix in friut, mini chocolate chips, marshmallows, whatever catches your fancy!

152 Kate June 29, 2009 at 3:24 pm

My favorite summertime tip – carry sun screen in your purse and keep it in the car, you need to reapply throughout the day

153 Dolcie Jones June 29, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Keep the kids moving!
Go fishing, visit near by parks, go hiking- never spend a full day at home. Kids need to get to know mother nature up front and in person. Create memories that will last their whole lives through.

154 Janice Wright June 29, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water.

155 DeeAnn S June 29, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Plant a garden, be it flower or veggie. It turns out to be family time if you get the kids and hubby involved. It also teaches the kids how things grow, and they can eat the rewards of their labors!

169 Gini June 29, 2009 at 10:15 am

Get a 1 or 2 oz bottle of sunscreen (I use 50 SPF Coppertone) and carry it with you in your purse. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to put sunblock on before leaving the house, and having it with me all the time has been great.

Respect Mother Nature – wear light clothing, hats, sunscreen…and drink lots and lots of water.

171 Christie June 29, 2009 at 6:30 am

Keep several bottles of water in your car. You just never know when it may be needed.

172 Whitney Hansen June 29, 2009 at 5:56 am

Invest in a couple tower fans. They are slim and fit in the corner of rooms; however, they help cool down the house and save on running the air conditioner so high.

183 Rachel Robertson June 29, 2009 at 1:01 am

When you take snacks with you make sure you include plenty of fresh fruit and raw vegetables. The fruit helps to keep your children hydrate. Vegetables are also great as not only are they healthy, but also light. Try and avoid any heavy snacks or ones which are salty.

184 Joy F June 29, 2009 at 12:54 am

Use lots of sunscreen and take it with you whereever you go. Also, drink lots of water. It’s so hot and you get dehydrated very easily. Thanks.

186 Patrice June 29, 2009 at 12:28 am

Do your gardenilng and take your walks as early as possible in the morning. Don’t be out in the midday sun. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, keep drinking plenty of water. Chilled fresh fruit salads are also a way to help you stay hydrated besides being healthy light snacks.

199 Jay F June 28, 2009 at 9:05 pm

There are plenty of minor league and amateur baseball games that take place in the summer, maybe even close to your house. Take advantage by meeting friends at the game.

200 Heidi June 28, 2009 at 9:04 pm

FANNY PACKS. In summer, before lettng your little ones go outdoors, put a fanny pack on each child-pack should include half frozen bottle of water, a wet wash rag in a ziplock type bag. Tell the kids to drink often and the wash rag can either cool them off or wipe off a dirty scrape. You can also put their kid cell phone in a plastic bag in the fanny pack too. Have the kids call you at appointed times to check in with you.

201 Laura R. June 28, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Always use sunscreen

202 Lisa G. June 28, 2009 at 8:13 pm

205 allyson ayala June 28, 2009 at 7:45 pm

make sure everything is put away quickly so nothing spoils….ziplock bags are good for that and re-usable. good for the enviroment

206 Kris Schade June 28, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Celebrate summer, be sure to spend extra time with friends and family. Make plans for camping trips, family get-togethers, and fun day trips. Make sure you and your kids have some terrific memories to look back on, and don’t worry; the housework and the pile of work at your job will still be there for you if you take a little extra time to celebrate.

207 Jena June 28, 2009 at 7:20 pm

Use a couple drops of dish soap and a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass as a fruit fly trap–it works best if you position a paper cone in the glass so that the tip is almost touching the liquid. (Pictures here: http://www.recipezaar.com/Fruit-FlyGnat-Trap-187531)

221 Jeanine June 28, 2009 at 4:11 pm

I used to bake myself mercilessly in the hot summer sun. Now, with my kids, I’m much more careful. I bring an umbrella and a big hat to the beach, and slather everyone with lots of UVA/UVB sunscreen. Aloe gel is nice for cooling skin if you’ve been out in the heat too long.

222 Jason Lawless June 28, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Lots of sunscreen! It has been HOT around here!

223 Peggy Gorman June 28, 2009 at 4:05 pm

225 Sheree Warner June 28, 2009 at 3:55 pm

My sun tips would be, 1) Sunscreen because Skin Cancer can be deadly! 2) Stay Cool inside and out! Even inside a house without air conditioning you can die of heat stroke. Use Fans, they can lower the temp enough to save your life. 3) Wear foot protection when out side, especially if you are swimming in a lake but even if it is just walking around the neighborhood or playing in your backyard creek you can cut your foot on a beer tab, broken glass or anything you might not see. and 4) Eye protection, the sun can damage your eyes and eyesight so please pick up a pair of sun glasses (I found some at the dollar store) that have UV Protection. Use common sense, take care of yourself and have fun!

273 Diane Baum June 28, 2009 at 2:10 am

Love fresh fruit (strawberries , apargus…) all year long and don’t want to pay the high winter prices for it? Buy it in excess cheaply now at farmers markets and freeze it. It is easy to do. Lightly rinse fruit and vegtables and let thourghly dry. DO NOT WASH-too much water causes your frozen fruits to become mushy. Place in containers, so the fruit is not touching and freeze. Enjoy!

274 Maria U. June 28, 2009 at 1:54 am

To keep insects away from you, put a sheet of Bounce in your back pocket.

275 catherine copeland June 28, 2009 at 1:18 am

280 Heidi June 28, 2009 at 12:12 am

Avon’s Skin So Soft moisturizer is a GREAT mosquito repellent and it’s not full of nasty chemicals. You can put a drops into your hands and rub Fido or Fifi down to help them avoid the mosquito that carries heart worm microfilaria. (I like the scent of the Avon Skin So Soft too…and no, I’m not an Avon Lady. )

281 Sonya Sparks June 27, 2009 at 11:53 pm

I don’t run my appliances (washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc) during the hottest parts of the day, only in the early mornings and late at night.

282 Kimberly June 27, 2009 at 11:15 pm

I keep plenty of suncreen with me even when I don’t think we’re going to be gone long. I carry it in my car, purse, etc. I learned the hard way, it is better to have it, than be without it, when you need it. I also put frozen ice cubes in ziploc bags and give them to my kids when we are in the car. Helps to keep them cool for a long time.

283 Michelle Underwood June 27, 2009 at 3:32 am

Keep hydrated, protect yourself from the sun and don’t get overheated!

284 Rhonda Martin June 27, 2009 at 2:46 am

Children get cranky just like us adults when it’s hot and humid and just plain miserable so to make us all feel better we make slushy’s out of real fruit so it not only cools us down a bit but it’s good for us too. The kids love helping make their own. Then with slushy’s in hand we take a nature walk since it’s mostly shaded and find bits of nature we can do art projects with on a rainy day or later in the year when there is snow on the ground. Pine cones make great Christmas tree ornaments with a little ribbon and glue. Taking a shady walk with a cold slushy keeps them cooler and ready for a nice nap later. Thanks for sharing this review and giveaway. We just love Scott products~!

285 MamaKat June 27, 2009 at 1:13 am

No matter how short you think a trip (even to the grocery store) may be, bring a bottle of water with a frozen ice tube for each child and, of course, sunscreen!

286 alfromri June 26, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Cut down bushes and trees and tell the kids that you are going to build a fort. Clean-up of all the branches goes quicker.

hmm, favorite Summer tips…I usually keep a small cooler in the car with drinks for the kids. I use juice pouches as my “ice” I freeze them and once they thaw out you have a nice cold drink! They work well if your kids get overheated, you apply to their skin. My other tips are sunscreen and lots and lots of water!

Try to avoid being outside during the hottest time of the day…noon to 3:30 pm is the worst for overheating and sun damage.

And sunscreen can fail, you know, or not be applied often enough or even enough. Best to always be cautious!

sunscreen everyday…even if you think you’ll only be outside for a little while :)

My favorite summer tip is to drink plenty of fluids, especially if you’re outside for any length of time. :)

Relax and enjoy the sun with lots of protection (sunscreen, uv clothing, hat, and of course lots of water)! Enjoy!

298 Geraldine D. June 24, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Wear a hat and keep yourself well hydrated all day. Drink BEFORE you become thirsty.

My favorite summer tip is to ALWAYS ALWAYS wear sun Block! I had a good friend who died at a young age because she worshipped the sun and never ever wore sun protection!!!
She got Malignant Melanoma!
So Please enjoy the outdoors but WEAR That Sun Block! The UVA and UVB Rays from the Sun AGE you and are VERY damaging to your Skin!
This is my Tip Favorite Summer tip and all YEAR tip!!!
Thanks for a GREAT Giveaway!

My favorite tip is to stock up on ice cream. It it way cheaper than an ice cream truck. Plus it is fun to make your own sundaes and banana splits at home. It is a great way to stay cool.

Use fans to circulate the air in your house and help lower the cooling costs.

I cannot emphasize enough to wear sunscreen. EVERYONE, SUNSCREEN! I sat out under a big shade tree for 2 1/2 weeks last June and spent the rest of the summer in the hospital! I was in a coma for 11 days, almost died, and almost lost a leg! From just sitting in the shade, but with no sunscreen.

My favorite tip that I share with friends and family in the summer months is this: Begin now to start freezing cut up pieces of fresh fruit in freezer containers or freezer bags. We freeze bananas just as they become a little too ripe and cut them up and freeze, watermelon, fresh pineapple, melon, grapes, and cut up strawberries. The melons serve as liquid refreshment as well. These are all easily removable for quick snacks in the summer and are portable enough frozen to go into a cooler bag for travel to the beach or park, or even for lunch at work. In regards to freezing liquids, like the water bottles, it is important that you remember to leave room at the top of the bottle, perhaps 1- 1/2 inches for expansion as the liquid becomes a sollid when frozen. some forget that and end up with distorted or broken bottles.
Summer month require more hydration and it is vital that both adults and children get plenty of liquids through drinks or fruits.

Summer tip: Explore the local farmers markets and try different fruits and veggies. You can expand your family’s diet and have fun, and support local growers.

Get out and walk especially in parks and trails, but make sure to check yourself all over for those nasty ticks that cause Lyme Disease.

If your going away on vacation and have plants that will need watered, use ice cubes and put in them in the pot. That way while your away your plants wont die when you get home.
Also, if your going on vacation and have pets, please make sure you have someone coming to take care of them.
Never leave babies, children, or pets in your hot car. The inside of a car gets hot very quick and can even cause death !

307 Vickie Bartlett June 24, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Protect your skin, use sunscreen and hats. Also drink plenty of water, it’s very easy to become dehydrated in the heat.

308 CMC June 24, 2009 at 3:59 pm

DO NOT leave your dogs in a hot car!

309 Betty June 24, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Gotta be making sunscreen as routine as brushing teeth. Spray it on before or as they get dressed for the day whether its rainy, whether you are going shopping or to the park. You’ll appreciate it when the routine kicks in and everyone is sunscreened before you head outside even on the most hectic of days.

310 Sylvia June 24, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Sunscreen, water and fun. Cleaning can wait but kids grow so fast

311 CandG~Jill W June 24, 2009 at 3:31 pm

We love to grill in the summer-pretty much every night. I marinade my chicken in a baggie all day (different marinades) then come home at night & put it on the grill-can’t get any easier, or tastier, than that! thanks

312 Cynthia Mercado June 24, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Sunscreen. water, and fun in the sun!

313 Cori Westphal June 24, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Do as much grilling as possible. It’s a cheap way to cook and everything tastes better grilled. And not to mention the heat it keeps out of your house!

314 sandra June 24, 2009 at 2:47 pm

always have water and/or juice on hand, and maybe some ice cubes!

When my kids were younger we started a club. I put notebooks together for all my kids and my nieces I was watching. We made up a club motto and song. The kids listed their favorite books and fun things they liked to do. I went to craft stores and bought all kinds of supplies for us to work on fun projects. For 2 hours everyday we would have club We made some pom pom pets, balloon pinata’s.clay projects etc. We would have treat time, scavenger hunts, walks to the park, read stories, sing songs and just some fun things. They would record all the things we did in their notebooks. After the 2 hours they would all go off and play and I would get some relaxing time for me. It worked out so well. Years later my niece told me that was the best time she ever had and she still had her notebook. That made me feel really good. That was how I made the most of my time in the summers.

Take water with you on your summer walks or when you go to the park. Drink water before you feel thirsty to stay hydrated.

317 SANDY June 24, 2009 at 2:44 pm

freeze water bottles the night before- or always have some frozen so it slowly defrosts as you are out- can always top off with water but always have cold drink. Also keeps the bottles of formula cold when you go out.
I also carry a cooler year round to transport the groceries- even ten minutes of heat can kill food and ruin it.

Get used to putting suncreen on right away after you dry off- make it a habit and protect your skin. Get your kids in the same habit as well as getting them hats and proper sunglasses- you wear sunglasses- they need the protection too.

318 Ellen C. June 24, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Freeze apple juice and use it instead of regular ice in your child’s sports bottle.

319 Aunt Zeesie June 24, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

320 Dina June 24, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Wear sunscreen, a cute hat, and drink lots of water!

Freeze seedless grapes for a cool healthy treat.

Simply wash, dry and separate grapes from the vine. Store in freezer bag and freeze for at least an hour. The frozen grapes will be good for 4-6 months. I doubt you will keep them frozen that long though, because so yummy. Frozen grapes taste like fruit sorbet, with texture added from the grape skin. Eat as a cool snack or add to drinks instead of ice.
