When disinfecting surfaces let the cleaner sit a while to have time to kill the germs. Spray, walk away and come back. Same for hand washing. Normal soap and water, but 30 seconds.

23 joanna smith June 26, 2009 at 7:40 pm

We battle the bug all year round by my nagging my kids all the time to wash their hands, and I have fruity smelling anti-bacterial soap pumps at all the sinks, the kids tend to wash their hands more when they like the sweet fruity scent of the soap, and I don’t get mad if they play and splash the water around a little, I’d rather have them wash their hands without a battle and clean up a little water around the sink, than have them defy me and not wash their hands. I also always carry Purel hand sanitizer with me when we go out and always ask my kids to rub their hands in it if they have been playing with other children and touching lots of toys or doors that many other people have touched. I think this combined with great healthy diet and lots of sleep help somewhat to keep everyone healthy!

24 Janice June 26, 2009 at 7:36 pm

65 Amy June 26, 2009 at 5:19 am

My kids wash their hands. That’s a given. But to keep the “bugs” away, they are allowed to be kids. They play in the dirt, they play with other kids, they go out in public, and I even allow them to touch things out in public(ie the sinks and the doorknobs). This fascination the American people have with germs and the fact that the country is now wrought with germ-a-phobes is just disgusting all its own. FYI: Hand sanitizers are becoming one of the reasons people are sick all the time. Your body is designed to handle these germs. Stop taking away it’s ability to fight and you won’t get sick if someone with a sniffle looks in your general direction!

66 Kathleen S. June 26, 2009 at 5:02 am

Also, when the kids are in school they have to change their shirts as soon as they get home (a good tip from our pediatrician. Shirts kids wear during school can become full of germs and they bring them home with them so it is a good idea to have them put on a clean shirt when they get home.

We battle it by washing our hands often, teaching the kids to cough into their sleeves (versus hands), and by trying to get lots of vitamin C (I know some say it doesn’t help, but I think it does!). All that said, the VBS kids got me this year with some kind of virus that hit hard. Can’t always beat it!

157 Jenn June 23, 2009 at 3:43 am

The biggest way I battle germs is by hand washing and hand sanitizing. I wash my hands after handling dirty dishes, diapers and after going to the bathroom. In public, when I leave a store or after handling money or heavily-used public objects (such as ATMs for deposits, shopping carts, gas pumps, etc.), I sanitize. I’m also doing the same with my children!

I’d like to think that it’s working… I was sick with four different colds/resp. infections throughout the late fall and winter, but I attribute that to being run down, overtired and stressed!

158 Amber June 23, 2009 at 3:26 am

I always wash my hands when I get home from anywhere and I also never share drinks with anyone!

My son is an antibacterial fanatic. It seems like I am constantly buying the antibacterial gel and when we have to get the school supplies at the beginning of the year, he always make me buy 2 of the huge bottles for his teacher. Now if I could get him to be that adamant about cleaning his room we would be in business.

186 Jessica June 22, 2009 at 8:42 am

I rely a lot on keeping hand sanitizers close by-in the car, at my work desk, and by the sinks at home.

187 Tanya Anna Wilson June 22, 2009 at 5:48 am

I know it may seem redundant but as a nurse and a mommy, I cannot reiterate enough about how important it is to wash your hands several times a day with lukewarm water and soap–using friction, too! Its amazing how people think a quick rinse in cold water is “handwashing” ((((shudder)))
Proper handwashing has been proven to be the most effective way to prevent the spread of illness and other communicable pathogens.

We are much healthier when we have some exposure to bacterial. I emphasize my kids coughing into their elbows not their hands, sneezing into a tissue whenever possible and washing hands whenever its possible. I think the best defense for my kids is getting a good amount of sleep!!!!

We wash our hands and take our multi-vitamins. So far, I haven’t gotten sick this year when I usually do every year, once a year!

205 May Schultz June 21, 2009 at 7:52 pm

I’m not as careful as I should be. I guess I’m fortunate that I rarely get sick. When I was a child (I’m 82 now) I swam in polluted water, in NY, and I think I must have built up an immunity to lots of “bugs”, because I’m basically healthy. I am surely grateful for that. When you are my age, you have enough other things to contend with!-

Hand washing is very important right along with eating well. We have allergies in the family and that gives me a special challenge. Teens get so feisty about not needing to take allergy meds untill they are miserable and it so frustrating. They end up with sinus infections.

223 Paul June 21, 2009 at 2:56 am

I take a good multi=vitamin every day, and I rarely get sick with anything.

224 Pat June 21, 2009 at 2:54 am

that video is hilarious. Frequent hand washing and germ killing hand gels help, but colds are inevitable – especially when people who are sick are out coughing and sneezing all over other people in public places. The anti viral tissues are great – we used them during the last round of bugs to go through the house.

It’s been mentioned a few times, but I believe washing your hands is the greatest way to Battle the Bug. Not only is it sanitary, it also teaches your child good habits. I constantly remind every child to soap-up before they start or finish a project. Washing your hands is not a 100% avoidance of the bug, but it sure does decrease your chances of getting it by margins. So long bug!!

305 Tracy Lewis June 20, 2009 at 7:10 am

Lots of handwashing. We also all carry the little bottles of hand sanitizer in either a purse or a backpack. In the car we have the antibacterial wipes.

319 Jill W June 19, 2009 at 9:27 pm

We use lots and lots of antibacterial lotion (she loves lotion, so this is easy to do!) and we wash our hands a lot, too, of course. She loves getting her stool, taking it to the sink, and getting to wash her hands, thanks!

Constant Hand Washing and Hand Sanitizers! No messing around with the germ passing! We try to stay germ free as much as possible.

321 Kristie June 19, 2009 at 8:20 pm

It’s not because we don’t want to, but we don’t go very many places! LOL!

322 Vickie Bartlett June 19, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Just common sense stuff, we try to eat right, get plenty of sleep and wash hands regularly.

We battle the Bug ALLLLL year long by keeping those Grubby paws clean!! The first thing they taught us in nursing school, was that the best line of defense against germs was GOOD hand washing technique! NONE OF THIS “lick and a promise” stuff, rinse for 2 seconds and your done! hahahha

Get em wet and lather up and get em clean! That is how you stay GERM FREE!

Thank YOU so much for the chance to win!

Thank you KLEENEX!!! YOU Rock!

I try to make sure my boys always cover their noses and mouths as well as wash their hands. When they do get sick I make sure they really rest so that it will not linger. Thanks for the chance.

We do the usual:
- hand washing
- door knob wiping
- vitamin C powder in juice
- increased garlic and ginger in Spring and Summer

We wash hands, sneeze in our arms, and found a great no alcohol foam sanitizer for the kids too!

I take probiotic supplements and vitamin C to strengthen my immune system. The video IS funny!

During cold & flu seasons I try to stay away from crowds as much as possible. I always call before visiting anyone & see if there has been illness before I visit. I also wash hands frequently. Also I clean the steering wheel of the car, the flusher thingy on the toilet, doorknobs, and T.V. remotes fairly often.

330 Patricia Hill June 19, 2009 at 4:27 pm

We practice hand washing several times a day and if we are out, hand sanitizer. Also, the kids do not visit if their friends are sick and we have no one over if our kids are sick.

331 Elena June 19, 2009 at 4:12 pm

We wash our hands, drink lots of green tea and take as much vitamin C as possible. In fact, I take Emergen-C at the first sign of a cold.

332 Carol June 19, 2009 at 4:11 pm

We drink a LOT of OJ year-round, and I believe in getting enough sleep.

333 kc June 19, 2009 at 3:43 pm

Washing hands is so important. I try not to touch things when I am out and wipe down the shopping cart handle before I shop.

334 Sylvia June 19, 2009 at 3:23 pm

We try and wash our hand very frequently. We use hand sanitizer when we can’t wash

335 Gayle J June 19, 2009 at 3:21 pm

I make sure we have orange juice every day and wash hands a lot. I keep waterless hand sanitizers in my purse and in the glove box of our car.

336 Carrie M June 19, 2009 at 2:54 pm

To help battle the bug, I keep a little bottle of hand sanitizer in the car, in my purse and in my desk at work. We are big on hand washing but sometimes you are just not near water.

337 Cheryl W June 19, 2009 at 2:50 pm

We always wash our hands after being out somewhere, and use tissues when we sneeze.

338 sandra June 19, 2009 at 2:34 pm

i try to enforce hand washing

339 Dddiva June 19, 2009 at 2:31 pm

We are hand washing fanatics around here.

340 Stephanie Reed June 19, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Cute video! I wash my hands the minute I get home. I also carry hand sanitizer in my purse.

341 CMC June 19, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I make sure and keep Airborne on hand and take it at the first signs of a sneeze, sniffle or tickle in the throat. I also take extra anti-oxidants during cold season (Vitamin E, Ester-C, Zinc, Garlic) and also keep Lysol spray at the ready!
