Organizing a Small Space for Crafts or Kids Toys

Organizing a Small Space for Crafts or Kids Toys

By Jane Blanchard

You don’t need a large space for a craft room or a child’s toy storage room. The main thing, when deciding on which room to choose, is to make sure it’s a quiet place that will help you concentrate better. You won’t want the room to receive a lot of human or pet traffic.

Organizing a Small Space

Once you find the perfect spot for your small activity room, it’s time to organize all your craft supplies and toys. Start with a solid working table. Make sure it’s small enough, so it’s not too high for the children to work on it. Stainless steel will not rust, but a wooden table is the type of table that most people like to choose. Wood is easy to match with everything else in the room. If you will be measuring your crafts a lot, it might be a good idea to glue or tape a measuring stick to the edge of the table. By doing this, you won’t need to locate it every time you need to measure something.

Important Supplies for the Room

If your space will also be a place to store children’s toys, consider adding a toy bin. You can get creative here. Try to make a bin that has the child’s name on it. You can find a variety of colored bins at any craft store. If you want the bins to match the rest of the room, like the picture below, you can do that as well. The storage bins pictured here are actually integrated into two small benches. This is a great idea if you need to save space in the room.

Another great idea to save space in the room is to install small mason jars underneath a banister or cabinet. You can label these mason jars by using small stickers or some markers that write on glass. These jars simply unscrew when you need the supplies. They are installed to the wood by a screw, which is screwed into the lid. You will be able to find many uses for different sized mason jars. Use a medium-sized jar for a pencil holder by cutting a circular hole in the lid. Sand the edges in order to make it less sharp.

Safety Precautions

When designing a craft room it might be a good idea to create a separate space for the children’s toys if you will have dangerous craft supplies near them. Things like scissors, glue, or paint can be dangerous to children who like to experiment with new materials. Always keep these out of reach if children will be nearby.

Style your new craft room or storage room with a fun wallpaper to finish it off. Don’t be afraid to modify a storage rack that is meant for something else. For example, you might be able to use a wooden peg board that is meant for tools, for your hazardous supplies. Simply hang this board on the wall, and you will always have instant access to your crafting supplies.
