Seeing The Everyday: Finding Poetry In The Prosaic (Giveaway)
If you’re new here, please consider subscribing to Mommy Daddy Blog. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on our updates or giveaways ;-)! If you are looking for exposure during the holiday rush, considering purchasing a Top Spot on our sidebar! Thanks for visiting!

Last Wednesday I had a chance to read the very first issue of Seeing The Everyday, a quarterly and advertisement free magazine that captures ordinary moments at home that are often overlooked. Such moments include grooming one another, helping with homework, or doing work out in the yard. Participating in these activities help develop strong relationships in families. Individuals who come from strong families take their experience into their community and future families. Highlighted through stories, artistic photography, and children’s artwork projects, Seeing The Everyday helps find poetry in the prosaic.
We find poetry in the prosaic by:
1. Playing with our little man together.
2. Doing chores around the house together.
3. Keeping each other company in the kitchen while preparing meals and snacks.
4. Eating at the dinner table.
5. Watching movies.
6. Taking random road trips.
7. Visiting the park and beach.
8. Playing video games. We’re still playing SNES and Playstation 1. Yes, we’re missing out on all the new stuff, but we’re too old to ask our parents for toys
Lately we haven’t been doing a few of them (5, 6, and 8 ) because we have been swamped taking care of Jayden (1st priority) and business. We’re trying to develop additional income streams. We’re also preparing to move. We just want so much for the family, but at the same time we need to remember to set aside time to be a family. Daddy doesn’t have to work tomorrow, so we will continue to pack boxes and try to at least do one of the things listed above that we haven’t done lately.
The first issue of Seeing The Everyday has got me hooked. I especially enjoyed the laughing section on page 78 and a story on page 8. In this particular story, Marlene Hinton reminisces on learning how to separate eggs while preparing angel food cake. She went through dozens of eggs trying to remove the yolks from the egg whites, never once did her mother take over or complain. She let her practice until she got it right. I’m sure many families will agree that some of the best moments are shared in the kitchen whether preparing a masterpiece or mastermess!
“It’s not about making a cake, dinner or any other number of important things we can spend our time doing. It is, however, about making a child. A unique, one-of-a-kind, significant, individual.” - Seeing The Everyday, Issue 1, Page 17

I absolutely love music, and I believe my daughter is just like me. She also enjoys being outside. When I take her out sometimes we just listen to the many sounds in nature. She loves hearing birds, she lights up! Also, when it rains I open up the window in the bedroom and tell her it’s music. It soothes and rocks her right to sleep.

Hi, I love this topic! Our family finds the Poetry in the Prosaic by:
attending church together
feeding the ducks and geese at the park
attending our two sons baseball games
family get togethers
staying in various state parks in a cabin
playing with our dog in the back yard
visiting with my 90 year old dad
taking walks together
family game nights
sharing household and yard chores
loving one another unconditionally!
Thanks so much…..Cindi

I love magazines, and the colors in this one look so amazing!
I will keep my fingers crossed!!
*Days at the water park running around.
*Mornings snuggling in bed on the weekends.
*Playing in the rain during a rain storm.
*Racing little twigs in the running water after a rain storm.
*Making milkshakes, and taking the rest to put into their freezer pops for an afternoon surprise.
*Watching movies together online or on the TV.
*Sunday morning cleaning.
*Staying at the hospital until 3am with my best friend so we could see a new little soul come into the world.
*Text messaging just to say “I love you.”
*When my teens come up and kiss me on the head, just because.

A few of my favorite ways to find Poetry in the Prosaic are to have family dinners together, read books to the kids and to go on walks.
Go Amie wrote 21 Jul at 9:42 am
We do lots of things, but most of all try to find the poetry in nature. Stargazing, moongazing, early morning walks through dewy fields, and looking for mushrooms all show the world around us from an alternate perspective. When we are going about our regular lives, we don’t see what is so special about the natural world, but if we take time to look at it in a different way we can see so much.

There are many ways that my family finds “Poetry in Prosaic”.
- Going on family picnics by the river and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.
- Blowing bubbles off our balcony as a family and have contests to see who can blow the biggest, whose floats the highest and whose bubble pops last.
- We visit the local animals shelter 2-3 times a month. We bring the animals treats, blankets when we can find some, food and whatever else we can (like cleaning supplies). We then go to each individual animal and pet him/her, give him/her a treat and talk to them. My kids take the dogs out back in the dog run and play with them and we all take turns holding the cats and kittens and playing with them. We want the animals to know that someone DOES love and care about them.
- We hike up to the top of the mountain at the park and sit on the rocks and stare at the beautiful autumn colors.
- We go to the park and feed the ducks and take pictures of the flowers.
- We sit out front of our building and draw pictures on the side walk (our neighbors always love the colorful designs we leave for them).
- Family movie night.
- Going for a long walk with our dog as a family.
- Leaving my husband notes on the counter when he leaves in the morning or leaving little kisses done in lip stick on the bathroom mirror.
- Tucking a note or a treat inside my kid’s lunchbox wishing them a nice day and letting them know that we love them.
I could go on and on. Sorry to ramble. LOL!
This looks like a GREAT magazine! This is one of those types of magazines that you hold to and share with others.
Thank you!

This looks like a fabulous magazine!
*Snuggling in bed each morning with my 2 year old.
*playing cards on the patio with my husband while my son plays in the backyard.
*taking my son to visit my grandma, who he calls, “Great”

just going outside is amazing, to see the kids interact with nature… I didn’t grow up with a love of the outdoors so it’s fascinating to see my kids want to learn about EVERYTHING- grass, bugs, dirt, birds, etc.
It’s also really fun to watch Jasper play with ice cubes. When Jayden can sit and swat at things, you must try it… I swear it can pass a crazy amount of time!

Hi… my Poetry in Proasiac family moments are
1. reading to my boys at bedtime
2. cooking dinner
3. eating dinner together (although the last 10 minutes typically wouldn’t fall into the poetry category)
4. nightly walks before bedtime
5. doing art crafts from time to time with boys
6. developing family traditions as we go
Thanks,
Maureen

*take family road trips (more when gas wasn’t eating away at our bank acct)
*we run errands together and do it with a smile on our faces
*we even have family chore times where we all do it together
*we try to have a fun lunch outing once a week even if it is somewhere like McDonalds.

Some days, we just have to drop everything and go visit great grandma and grandpa and go swimming in thier pool!! And when it’s really crazy, we drop everything, hit the Circle K right down the street….and get Slurpees:) Then we come home and sit in the front yard under the huge tree and slurp our slurpees!!!

We take nature walks together, pausing to look at whatever catches our toddler’s eye, dance around the living room together, blow bubbles in the backyard, watch the kids put on little “shows” for us, play games together, read together, and play car games like looking for numbers on signs or playing 20 Questions, etc. And of course we just talk and muse aloud about life together! We try to ask a lot of questions and look at things in new ways.

When we moved a little over a year ago, it took a week and a half for our stuff to get to us. It was one of the best times in my life! We listened to the radio, played games, took walks, went to the library, and we’d stare at the ceiling finding pictures in the finish. We make sure to revisit that time often and forget all the stuff that crowds out that kind of fun!

Our house is set in the woods, so we sit on the porch swing and listen to the crickets chirp, the owl who lives in the backyard hoot and the dozens of different birds call back and forth.
Homemade chocolate chip cookies or brownies heighten the experience as does an icy glass of tea.
Sometimes we play “remember when?” since we have been married 25 years. Other times we play “I can’t wait until” as look forward to the next 25.
We have a red fox who wanders by now and then, lots of deer and a handful of neighborhood boys who play “boy games”, usually noisy and filled with more sounds than words in the back woods, too. It is old-fashioned and comforting.

Something we do: when talking walks outside we don’t just walk but we take along sketchbooks and when something inspires us we stop and draw. The kids have little journals too and every day I give them a simple sentence starter and they complete it however they want and they can make it however short or long they’d like.
