I sleep with my daughter, but I've heard that new babies shouldn't sleep between the parents, since mothers are generally the ones tuned into the baby's presence.

I don't know, since I'm single. But at first I thought it was strange, until I learned that co-sleeping is the norm in the world and I had friends who'd done it. Rolling over and nursing is definitely a good thing. I slept much better than the one or two times I tried putting her in the "co-sleeper." And she slept much better next to me too. Still does (at two years and 7 months old). But I do see the end is near...she wants her own bed now, I think.

Good luck!

Like many things doctors and other child /baby experts say it must always be taken with a pinch of salt. My wife and I have slept with our 1 year old in the bed as he often needs one or two night feeds (comfort feeds ) really. Often my wife will fall asleep with him on her chest. Never had any problems becuse as soon as he moves my wife instanly wakes up. A mothers bond I guess.

It isn't for everyone and first time mothers may be especially worried about it but by the time you have your second or third you know what advice to ignore and what to heed.

I'd advise all new mothers-to-be to talk to mothers with their 2nd or (better) 3rd child for some real advice.

Doctors and other experts are usually just covering their bases when they advise against sleeping with a very young child or baby... deaths have happened because of it BUTdeaths have happened because a baby choked after pulling a bed sheet in a cot over itself. What can you do? Do what is best for you and your child, listen to any advice people give you and balance that against your childs needs.

i very much enjoyed co-sleeping with my Nia. i miss it a lot. she doesn't sleep with me now because i'm scared she may fall off the bed. Her pediatrician discouraged it, but I went with my instincts which told me it was ok. My midwife gave me encouraging words about the whole thing, which made me feel it was safe (unlike what the doctors said).

I was bad about rolling around in my sleep, but once the baby was there I was calm. It's like the same thing that stops you from rolling off the bed in your sleep also stops you from rolling onto the baby. PLus in the early days they nurse so much you don't really have anywhere to go. You're kind of stuck there all night with the baby attached. And trust me, if you try to roll it will hurt! Pulling the nipple out of that airtight vacuum without releasing pressure first is painful. You'll wake up! LOL
